The Sunderland Advanced Mobility Shuttle (SAMS)

ANGOKA’s role

ANGOKA is facilitating a safe operating environment by securing the Intelligent Transport Systems from cyber attack and protecting the integrity of data exchanged between different transport modes. This includes the traffic management and EV-charging infrastructure.

Project overview

The SAMS initiative will test a self-driving, emissions-free Auto-Shuttle. This shuttle will ferry passengers between Sunderland Interchange, Sunderland Royal Hospital, and the University of Sunderland City Campus on public roads. Although safety drivers will accompany each ride, the project aims to establish and showcase a secure remote supervision protocol, paving the way for future commercial use.

At a glance:

  • £5.5m project funded under Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV)

  • Level-4 teleoperated passenger service along an Intelligent Transport Corridor

  • Start: March 2023, End: February 2025.
